About this deal

A handy drip-stop means the juicing bowl can be sealed without spillage. No cleaning brush is provided, but that hardly feels necessary here, since the filter attached to the squeezing chamber can be easily cleaned with running water. Interestingly, the two speed settings available here don’t apply to different types of fruit and veg. Instead, setting “1” gives you clear juice, while the slightly noisier and more powerful setting “2” offers juice with up to 50% extra fibre. There is a small decanter, to collect the juice, provided with measurements denoted on the side should you want or need that sort of thing. s The decanter also has a snap on cover and the discharge spout on the juicer is a wonderful pivot hinge design that snaps tightly closed to stop juice flow instantly. No drips. We found the best juicer machines to be a breeze to use, with wide chutes to put whole apples and oranges down.

It may seem a little obvious, but a slow juicer is exactly what its name suggests. It is a special form of juice press which slowly cuts fruit and veg into small pieces and squeezes all of the juice from them. The Philips slow juicers not only squeeze the fruit but also extract juice from the fruit pulp. Not only that, but it has been scientifically proven that nutrients can be best preserved when masticated at a rate of 30 to 40 movements per minute. Next I juiced two medium-sized Granny Smith apples, which yielded 150ml of juice, with a little bit a pulp. This is a relatively standard result. I started by making a double portion of the Farmers’ Market juice from the recipe booklet, which contains strawberries, apples, carrots and some cucumber. This method enables you to juice directly into a glass or the lidded jug that’s included. Since there’s no sieve, there are no parts that can become clogged. A final clever feature is the one-metre cord, which winds around the machine once you’re finished. Plus, there’s space inside the pulp container to store the tray, pusher and juice jug. We assessed how easy each pulp container was to empty and how easy it was to handwash, using any supplied cleaning brushes when doing so.

We ranked juicers on how noisy they were. While all juicers will make some noise, the best ones were much quieter than others.

The machine produced some amusing squeaking sounds while processing the leafy greens, but that is just part of the process and still more pleasant to the ear than the drill-like noise of some centrifugal juicers. While making several different juices, I had to empty the bin often. This wasn’t a massive chore, but it could prove annoying if you’re wanting to make several glasses of juice in one go – perhaps if you’re juicing for the whole family. Smoothness is a personal choice, so we've made sure to highlight the best juicers for smooth juice, and the best for those who like bits in their juice. Ease of use The drink was quite frothy, probably down to the fact that there’s no separator to reduce the foam on top. With honey added, the drink was inoffensive but not particularly pleasant – it would have benefitted from including fruit.

Two buttons sit at the top of the machine: one for turning the juicer on and off, the other for the reverse function, which needs to be held down should any fruit or veg become lodged during the juicing process. Cleaning the Avance HR1922 is made easy because of the pre-clean rinsing function. By pouring water into the hollow plunger and turning the juicer on setting 2, you can rinse out the juicer lid, the steel blades and the micro-mesh filter. After a year of juicing daily, I am upgrading to five stars as the one issue I had was a user error; you actually don't need to wiggle parts to get the juicer started if you align the parts correctly which isn't totally obvious to the untrained eye. Easy to use, the auger takes down most ingredients with ease, meaning you can juice just about anything. (I still have not tried nuts). This is in contrast to some of the bigger machines, such as the Sage Big Squeeze or the Kuvings EVO820 Evolution Cold Press, which come with more sizeable jugs that require greater room during the juicing process. A bunch of grapes was juiced efficiently – another benefit of a slow juicer over its centrifugal counterparts, which tend to throw lighter bits of fruit around without necessarily squeezing the most out of them. While setting 1 produced relatively clear juice with lighter foam, setting 2 resulted in a creamier, almost smoothie-like juice (if one could imagine a smoothie made out of apples and carrots) with a more intense flavour.
