About this deal

However, she has reckoned without Justin, the son of the hotel owner, who seems determined to take over the running of the kitchen. She has reckoned without Justin, the son of the hotel owner, however, who seems determined to take over the running of the kitchen. although there's a debate about what counts as historical and to me it's before 1980, how about you?

The new chef has sacked everyone and Louise, Meg's mother, needs her daughter's help, and she needs it NOW.One walk-on who didn't say anything was randomly named Ted, and then we had Edward/Teddy mentioned later on who was a completely different but far more important person. Meg falls in love with the hotel, despite the fact it needs some work doing on it, none of the rooms have bathrooms, the decor is dated. The grumpy love interest remained a bit of a mystery to me, but I enjoyed their slow coming together. The 1960s setting, and his ambivalent feelings towards his father, totally explains Justin's attitude to Meg and her mother, yet it is also quite clear to the reader fairly early on that Justin is also quite smitten by Meg and finds any excuse to visit the hotel. Trouble is she is a woman in very much a man’s world and when the son of the owner Justin appears, he shakes Meg’s confidence to be able to produce anything edible.

I could go on and on about how great she is so please just go and grab some of her books so you can love her writing too. Meg finds herself attempting to make the hotel profitable again when she stands in for the chef after the previous one quit. Meg has been interning in London restaurants and has managed to get some good experience, despite the endemic sexism of the time. I think I have read pretty much all of Katie Fforde's books, and though this wasn't my favourite, it was still an easy read.

Being set in the 1960s it meant that some of the character's views were very off compared with today and I thought it was great to see how attitudes have mostly changed.

Although honestly, I'd say I felt that at some parts (especially around the 60-75% sections), that they were perhaps *too available*to help her-- It sounds rather terrible of me to complain about reliable friends, but they were almost too-present to help should the need arise, given at such short notice and no matter the distance. But my biggest bugbear was the number of characters in the story, and particularly when another boatload turned up for the finale/closing image.

Meg, while being an amazing and hardworking chef, is also inexperienced, especially when it comes to actually running a kitchen. There were loads and loads and loads of characters, many of whom shared the same initial (Andrew, Alexandra, Amanda, Antoine and Ambrosine, all in the first chapter, then Laura, Letty, Lexi, Lizzie and Louise, and then Sally, Sam, Simon, Susan and Suzanne – really, Susan *and* Suzanne? Inevitably, there are all the dramas and misunderstandings that make the course of love run un-smooth, and they make the wonderful ending all the more heart-warming. I was also rooting for Meg’s happy ending to include not only saving the hotel she’d grown to love, but the man she loves too.Despite having a confirmed opportunity to experience a professional kitchen in a French restaurant, Meg takes control of the hotel’s kitchen even though the owner’s son views her through misogynistic eyes. As well as a love hate relationship between Meg and Justin, we see Louise blossoming relationship with Justin’s father Andrew. The hotel is charming, a place I’d love to stay at with its welcoming and homely feel and beautiful location. Her relationship with Meg was delightful and very special which made the story even better and it was wonderful to catch up with characters from past books. I bet you’re sitting there thinking, ‘Oh, here she goes again with her I-don’t-know-if-I-wanted-to-smack-him-or-climb-him-like-a-tree thing again!
